One of the most common traps in software system design is an excessive focus on rare and atypical scenarios.
This happens when teams get caught up in analyzing and designing for situations that only occur in a tiny fraction of cases. In trying to anticipate these edge cases, the architecture grows increasingly complex, while the standard user flows-the ones most people rely on-gradually break down and become cumbersome.
The result is that primary user journeys end up subordinated to the needs of rare or exceptional cases. This is a classic trap that can ensnare both junior developers and seasoned analysts or architects.
While there’s no single universally accepted term for this problem, it’s often called “Edge Case Obsession” or “Optimization for Edge Cases.”

When 80–90% of discussions and design decisions revolve around scenarios that appear in only 1–5% of cases. The system becomes over-engineered, and the main user path-the Happy Path - turns into a gauntlet of checks, flags, conditions, and optional fields.
Instead of a smooth and predictable experience, users constantly have to confirm that “this isn’t that rare exception.”
2. The Tail Wagging the Dog
A metaphor that perfectly captures the problem: a rare exception (the tail) starts dictating the design and rules of the entire system (the dog).
Instead of handling it separately-via its own process, screen, or even manually-it gets shoehorned into the main flow. The result is a loss of clarity, simplicity, and logical consistency in the architecture.
3. Pareto Principle – 80/20 Rule
From a systems perspective, this is an inefficient allocation of effort.
Good design assumes:
- 80% of effort should ensure that 80% of users can complete their tasks quickly and easily;
- the remaining 20%-rare or complex scenarios-should not hinder the majority or burden the main flow.
When this balance is lost, the system stops serving the common use case effectively.
4. Special Case Bias
A cognitive bias where analysts or architects give undue weight to rare but memorable incidents-errors, complaints, or unusual situations from past experience.
In trying to “never let this happen again,” they introduce complex, heavy-handed mechanisms that degrade the experience for everyone else.
Why It’s Dangerous
Sacrificing standard flows for rare cases leads to system degradation:
- Cognitive overload. Users encounter fields, buttons, and options they don’t need and don’t understand.
- Code fragility. The more special checks and exceptions in the core logic, the harder it is to make changes without side effects.
- Dilution of product value. The product ceases to be a convenient tool for its primary purpose and becomes a “Swiss Army knife” where even basic functions are hard to find.
How to Avoid It
Practical strategies to prevent architecture and UX degradation include:
